Canadian Hockey: What’s old is new again
The things that happen in hockey today
Hockey is covered 24/7/365 in Canada. Entire TV networks are dedicated to the game, and ground-breaking hockey news is The News. Social media enables everyone – players, coaches, pundits and fans alike – to share and comment on the stories coming out of today’s game.
The things that happen in hockey today– the signings, the trades, scores, wins and losses, scandals, fights and just the everyday – are passed along via technology almost immediately. But where are the hockey stories from before Facebook, twitter and mobile devices? And where are the stories that couldn’t be shared when the storyteller was an active player?
The stories are legendary, passed down from player to player, generation to generation. As a rookie, he may have first heard the story in 1986. Years later, he recounts the story as the grizzled vet in his last days. The stories took place and were shared in dressing rooms and buses, on the bench and in the air, in bars and behind bars and across the hockey-playing globe. Now they are also at Slapshot Diaries - THE place where these stories live, for the world to see.
About Slapshot Diaries
Slapshot Diaries is a place where the hockey stories and characters from the past exist to bring another perspective to the crazy shit that happens in the present. It’s about leveraging today’s technology to give a voice to the players we watched years ago – before Facebook and twitter. Here’s a powerful and personal story from former Toronto Maple Leaf player Kurt Walker, as told to Slapshot Diaries staff writer Josh Kloke.
FUSE has partnered with author & musician Dave Bidini and filmmaker Mike Downie to bring these stories to life. We got involved in Slapshot Diaries because we believe that storytelling is an important way for us to stay connected. To our past & our present. To family, friends and strangers. To our home, community and the world around us. To companies, associations and brands. At FUSE, we honour the storytelling craft to create Connected Experiences for our clients.
Our hope is that the Slapshot Diaries brand is recognized for a unique perspective that goes beyond the box scores and cliché post-game interviews; a raw, 100% authentic, behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to be at the heart of the hockey universe.
Look, listen and watch for it…Slapshot Diaries is warming up for the 2015-16 season.
Checking my phone every five minutes. Scanning Facebook nervously for new messages. Careening wildly between pure elation and utter dejection. Wondering if maybe we should just break up already, and forget the whole %@*&ing thing. Sound like love?
