Get past third base with social media
Follow these basic rules and watch your business score big
Everyone thinks about it, everyone does it, but not everyone does it well—social media, that is. Unfortunately, many brands are still behaving like teenagers, just figuring this stuff out.
Every 60 seconds, something is shared, and 7 BILLION things are shared each week. Social is HUGE (that’s what she said). So how do you stand out and make yourself absolutely irresistible? Follow these basic rules and watch your business score big.
Be your authentic self
However exciting it is to jump in and role play, no one wants to interact with some guy with a big logo on his chest. So let it all hang out. Be the real you and people will spread the word.
It’s all about communication
Open yourself up to the idea that social media is an exchange. Self-serving actions only leave others disappointed. Be patient and attentive. Make them feel special. Make sure it’s as good for them as it is for you. Learn how to push people’s buttons and they will engage with your content. You want a relationship, not a one-night stand, people. What better way to keep the communication lines open than with a little community management.
Bigger isn’t always better
Learn to engage on a variety of scales. Be nimble and adaptable. Sometimes 140 characters is enough for a big bang, while other times you need to bring in the big guns. Remember, your number isn’t important. Don’t think of it as another notch on the post—aim for quality over quantity.
Social media isn’t always clean; sometimes you need to tidy up a bit. But there’s ways of keeping things under control. Be present and responsive when things come up and the rewards will far outweigh the risks. Try and link up with others who compliment your brand—having too many partners is never an issue when precautions are taken.
Spy on the competition
The great thing about social media is that no one ever closes the curtains. It’s all out there for you to see. So take the opportunity to check out what they are doing. Maybe you can learn a few things.
Keep it fresh
People are inherently fickle when it comes to social media , there’s always new alternatives to your brand, so don’t be predictable or repetitive. Experiment a bit. You don’t have to be so vanilla and only use Facebook and Twitter. How about using Snap Chat to add some excitement? Try making a Vine video, using different lighting, or even music. Bring in friends or colleagues to spice things up, use food, or maybe even some fun toys. You also don’t need to be so graphic…so bust out the blindfold and try a podcast or live streaming on Meerkat or Periscope instead!
Remember that no one becomes a social media Adonis overnight. So practice and practice some more. And when it’s over, evaluate how things went. Think about making revisions. Get some outside opinions. Then rest up and try it another day.
After I turn off iPhone’s infamous Marimba alarm clock at 6AM I find myself on Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin, and… ah heck, I’m on the Internet for a good while before I get out of bed.
