FUSE and Colorfield create interactive installation for FITC Toronto 2016
Creative technologists partner with artist Sophi Kravitz for leading conference celebrating design and creative tech innovation
Toronto, ON – FUSE Marketing Group Inc. has partnered with Colorfield a digital design and development company. Together they’ll create an interactive digital installation, named 288 (#288Project), to debut at the upcoming FITC Toronto 2016.
The three day professional celebration of the best the world has to offer in design, web development, media and innovation in creative technologies will be held April 17 – 19, 2016 at the Hilton Hotel in Toronto. Collaborating with Colorfield and FUSE teams of creative technologists is artist and engineer, Sophi Kravitz, employing her experience in robotics and art installations to create the central design element. The agencies were selected for the project by FITC following an RFP earlier this year.
“It's our 15th year and we wanted to make the anniversary special by doing something pretty amazing on a scale no one's seen before at FITC,” explained Shawn Pucknell, FITC’s director. “This year's theme is Level Up and the audience will really be able to do this in every sense of the word. Installations have always played a huge role in what we do; we're about bringing together creative technologists from different industries and fields to share knowledge and have this incredible immersive experience. Furthermore, this kind of innovative digital work gets its genesis in the relationships that start at FITC. We want the creative tech community to see what's possible, and that means bringing collaborators together to make it happen at the actual event.”
Changing the way we see things: creatively and technologically
The main installation builds on technologies often taken for granted, like 3D glasses, and will illustrate how common materials can behave in different ways. A custom-designed kinetic display measuring 14’ in length by 7’ in height and using 24 x 12 (288) “pixels” from sandwiched layers of polarized film will take advantage of the film’s ability to filter light.
The pixels will change appearance from solid black to transparent on a white background with motors. The installation will be built using the latest and most precise tools available including laser cutters, CNC mills and 3D printers, employing 288 servos and Arduino compatible microcontrollers. It will serve as the main focal point or hub for the conference, with animations of constantly transforming geometric patterns designed to engage and amuse the thousands expected to attend. In keeping with the theme, the design team will take the installation to the next level by including an interactive component to allow attendees to control the screen from a tablet or mobile device.
Continued Mr. Pucknell, “We were immediately struck by the originality of the team’s proposal. We haven't seen anything like it done at an event, and felt that it would be a great piece for all attendees to experience. It fit with our desire to have something unique, interesting and visually stimulating as the first thing visitors can see when they enter. We're very excited to see it built and at the event, and look forward to seeing how it will be used by attendees.”
“Our hope is to entice the reaction of experiencing something new and for the first time,” commented Marc Pelland, creative technologist, FUSE Marketing Group. “What we learn from that encounter is how we level-up ourselves and increase curiosity. We want delegates and creative technologists alike to return from the conference inspired to build something new and different.”
“Occasionally we get to work on installations that look truly alien, where physical objects behave in ways that you only see on-screen or in games,” added Christopher Lewis, senior developer, Colorfield. “It's like the first time you experience a drone hovering in front of you; it's new and different and your brain goes, wow - what is that!? This installation is about making those connections. It's about being stimulated by our environment and interactions. It's about the value of noticing our digital and real life experiences and growing; leveling-up.”
