Daily Learnings from SXSW - Day Two
#SXSW DAY TWO
Lots happening in Austin today… the city is bustling with a bizarrely entertaining cross section of tech nerds and hipsters. However much of a juxtaposition it may be, it seems to work perfectly.
Today’s blog focuses on one theme: App Launches
Hottest New App – Meerkat
SXSW is famous for launching some of the biggest emerging trends and products to hit the digital world – Twitter’s launch in 2007 being the most famous. So every year we debate which launch is going to be the winner… the next big trend or agent of disruption. Based on the constant talk at almost every session our group has been to, it’s becoming clear that MeerKat is this year’s leader. Even Gary Vaynerchuk came on stage with it running and 400 people watching it live on the app.
What is Meerkat?
It’s a video streaming app… which might not sound unique if we just leave it at that. However, it has some pretty unique elements:
1) Subscribe to Watch:
You have to be a subscriber to watch… or stream.
Content producers can pre-promote an upcoming video stream so followers can sign up to watch (build your communities).
3) Temporary Streaming:
Similar to Snapchat, it streams so it doesn’t retain the content… fitting with people’s desire not to have things live forever online.
4) Earn Points:
It employs a gamification component (you earn points)… the more people who watch your streaming videos, the more points you get.
It’s too early to call if Meerkat is the next Twitter or Uber… but we’re betting it will continue to make noise for the foreseeable future.
The Questionable New App – Biz Stone’s “Super”
Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter, was out promoting his new app, Super. This is an interesting one… inspired by people’s love of posting fun, unique and creative posts, Super is a very design-oriented new platform that allows users to be way more creative than any current platform (Pinterest and Instagram to name two).
The app lets you take an image (yours or one they serve up to you with help from Google I’m sure) and make it your personalized meme. I played with it twice already and admit it’s pretty unique. Here’s a simple Texas post I did while watching the session (I being Stephen… not Pat who would have been far more creative).
The FUSE Review
We’re not sold that this one will fly. Last year Biz was saying his launch of Jelly was the new dimension of search… but it was a flop. Will this one win the crowds over? The big question for us is whether people’s desire to be creative in their posts is as important as their basic desire to just post. The concept is better than Jelly for sure, but the universality of Super’s offering is what’s most questionable.
Regardless, listening to Biz Stone is always interesting. He’s not a typical presenter… you have to go with him on a tangent-filled journey to see the full story. He had some great points… one of our favourites was his definition of business success – To him, success should be measured in three key components
2) giving back via philanthropy
3) having fun
